The Ki-43-I Hayabusa was celebrated for its exceptional maneuverability and impressive rate of climb, attributed to its lightweight design. It featured unique differential "butterfly" maneuvering Fowler flaps, which significantly enhanced its performance in tight turns. Powered by the Nakajima Ha-25 engine, driving a two-bladed, two-position variable-pitch metal propeller, the Ki-43-I could reach a top speed of 495 km/h (308 mph) at 4,000 meters (13,000 ft).
