Kongo, the lead ship of her class, began her life as a battlecruiser built in Britain and underwent two significant modernizations between the wars, transforming her into a potent fast battleship. She participated in numerous campaigns, including the Malayan campaign, Indian Ocean raids, Midway, Guadalcanal, Santa Cruz, and the Battle of the Philippine Sea, before her final engagement at Leyte Gulf.
