[C-31] 1/72 Aichi E16A1 seaplane "Zuiun" 302sqn

This kit captures the essence of the Imperial Japanese Navy's versatile two-seat reconnaissance floatplane, known by the Allied reporting name "Paul".

Developed to succeed the E13A, the E16A1 Zuiun was a groundbreaking aircraft, officially accepted by the Navy in August 1943 as the Navy Reconnaissance Seaplane Zuiun Model 11. It uniquely featured dive brakes integrated into the front legs of its twin float struts, allowing it to perform effectively in a secondary role as a dive bomber. Its wings were also designed to fold, a crucial feature for shipboard stowage on cruisers and battleships.

The actual aircraft boasted an all-metal construction with a stressed skin surface, complemented by a wooden tailplane, wooden wingtips, and fabric-covered control surfaces. Armed with two wing-mounted 20mm Type 99 Model 2 cannons and a flexible rear-firing 13mm (0.51 in) Type 2 machine gun, it could also carry up to 250 kg (551 lbs) of bombs. Though entering service late in World War II, the Zuiun saw extensive action during the 1944 Philippines campaign and later in kamikaze operations around Okinawa.
